Brokenness

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. - Psalm 34:18

It may sound crazy, but this has long been one of my favorite verses. I know... But, anyways, it is from the place of "brokenness" that the child of God is closest to God. The simple reason for this is: God cannot share His "highness" with anyone else. When you and I are willing to except that only God is exalted while we abased, He is pleased to dwell with us because our perspective of Him (and ourselves) is right.

Isaiah 57:15
For thus says the high and exalted One Who lives forever, whose name is Holy, "I dwell on a high and holy place, and also with the contrite and lowly of spirit in order to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.

When I see God as Most High and myself as most-low my view of things is most clear. This is the climate of meeting-place between God and man. "For though the Lord is exalted, yet He regards the lowly, but the haughty He knows from afar (Ps 138:6)." This is the place God gives out grace: "God is opposed to the proud but gives grace to the humble (1 Peter 5:5)."

I encourage you to look to the One who created all things from the place of lowliness and weakness. Look to Jesus with an attitude of contriteness and brokenness and He will meet you there. Tell Him you can't do it (i.e., life) on your own - your fears, your worries, your marriage, the raising of your children, your financial struggles, your physical ailments, all of it - tell Him it is all His to take care of and He will meet you there. "Humble yourselves under the mighty Hand of God that He may lift you up in due time, casting all your anxiety upon Him because He cares for you (1 Peter 5:6-7)."

"For My hand made all these things, thus all these things came into being," declares the Lord. "But to this one I will look, to him who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My word." - Isaiah 66:2
